The Westin Maui Resort & Spa

A hotel review of a lovely, contemporary property on Ka'anapali Beach

Help Me Find Related Trips

Last spring I had the opportunity to spend three glorious nights at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa with three friends (and fellow travel writers). While our itinerary on Maui was jam-packed -- we snorkeled, toured the upcountry and went hiking -- we did find time to relax and enjoy the resort's spacious guest rooms, adults-only pool, garden restaurant, Heavenly Spa and world-class luau.

With a Director of Romance and a Director of Fun on staff (I'm not kidding!), it's no surprise that this resort was recently named Orbitz' "Best In Stay for Couples" and included in Travel + Leisure's "Top 50 Family Resorts." In fact, I think the Westin Maui was the ideal place not only for our girlfriend getaway, but perfect for couples, families and even guys-only "mancations" -- a golf course is just a stone's throw away!

Accommodations at The Westin Maui

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa is located on Ka'anapali Beach on the northwest side of Maui. It's about an hour's drive from the main airport in Kahului. Right next door to the resort is Whaler's Village, a retail and restaurant center.

The oceanfront rooms and suites in the Beach Tower ("Premium Deluxe Ocean View") are the most coveted, with their spectacular vistas of the ocean and the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai. Of course those pretty views come with a price! The least expensive of the accommodations are in the Ocean Tower with low-level garden views or views of the golf course and West Maui mountains on the "back side" of the resort.

All of the 731 rooms and 27 suites feature Westin's trademarked Heavenly Beds: 10 layers of deluxe bedding. The rooms' Heavenly Bath includes extra-fluffy towels, curved shower-curtain rods for more space in the tub, and signature spa-like bath products.

Heavenly Spa & Pool Area

While I toured the Heavenly Spa with my friends, I simply didn't have time during our short stay to fit in a heavenly treatment in the 15,000-square-foot facility. The others did, however, and raved about some of the best massages and body wraps they've ever had.

The setting and ultra-blissful vibe inside the spa can't be beat, that's for sure. When you book a service, you have access to the relaxation lounge, where you can sit on comfortable chaise lounges in front of huge windows that face the ocean. Flip through magazines, or just enjoy the pretty views, while sipping ginger lavender lemonade and lavender biscotti.

Spa services range from simple to exotic. If you're feeling adventurous, try a Coconut Milk Bath, Lavender Body Butter Treatment or Pevonia Caviar & Pearl Facial. Massage therapies include rhythmic lomi-lomi, deep tissue or relaxation.

The workout room is open 24 hours a day with state-of-the-art equipment. Men's and women's locker rooms each have sauna, steam room and whirlpool.

If lounging poolside is your thing, you'll love the 87,000-square-foot pool area with five distinct pools (including an adults-only pool), two water slides and Jacuzzi. Interspersed throughout the lush setting are a number of waterfalls.

Dining & Luau at The Westin Maui

The signature restaurant at The Westin Maui is tropica (lowercase "t" intentional). This oceanfront eatery serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Choose from fresh seafood, steak and pasta entrees, and dine among flickering tiki torches.

The more casual courtyard setting is home to the OnO Bar & Grill (uppercase "O" intentional). The popular breakfast buffet offers a kids-eat-free program. It also serves lunch and dinner, plus enjoy a menu of yummy "pupus" (Hawaiin style appetizers) for happy hour.

If it's romance you're after, consider arranging a table for two sunrise breakfast or sunset dinner. These meals take place in a very private area on the property, and make a nifty way to mark a special occasion, for sure.

The Wailele Polynesian Luau is something the entire family can enjoy. This amazing celebration is held twice weekly at The Westin Maui, with performances of native dances, plus the island's only five-member fire-knife group. A multi-course meal of Hawaiian favorites is served family style at your round table. Enjoy Blue Hawaiians or Mai Tais from the included bar. It all takes place in a pretty garden setting, while you watch the sunset behind tall palm trees. It's definitely the most sophisticated luaus I've been to in Hawaii, and I highly recommend it.
