Since Vancouver, British Columbia, is the film location for
such popular TV shows such as Smallville and The X-Files, its no wonder most
Americans recognize the seaside city as Hollywood north of the border.
However, this charming city offers visitors a lot more than an inexpensive
movie set and low production costs. Set against the backdrop of the Coast
Mountains, Vancouver
offers a wide array of activities to fill any itinerary. From al fresco recreation
and fashionable shopping to upscale dining and low-key relaxation, this mini
metropolis has something for everyone.
Recreational opportunities outdoors
Whether youre a nature lover or not, Vancouvers best recreational opportunities
are found outside. After all, who wouldnt want to soak up the sunshine,
breathe in crisp, clean air and take in the beautiful water and mountain views?
One of the prime venues for doing just that is Stanley Park.
The largest city park in Canada more than 1,000 acres Stanley
Park thrives on all
things outdoors. From biking, running and rollerblading to bird watching or
just working on your tan, this is the place to be. From mid-March through
October, you also can enjoy an hour-long tour via horse-drawn carriage.
Architecture buffs should not skip visiting Vancouvers
many bridges: Lions Gate Bridge,
Ironworkers Memorial
Bridge and Capilano Suspension Bridge.
Other great outdoor attractions include sea kayaking, scuba diving,
windsurfing, fishing and golf.
During my visit, I found the best way to get a glimpse of
the city was by biking. Two of my traveling companions and I rented bikes at a
shop just down the street from our hotel. We set off down along the seawall and
biked all the way to Stanley
Park. The city, sea and
mountain views were amazing. My only regret was that our bike ride was only 30
minutes long.
Shopping, dining and spa
Like other fantastic shopping meccas, Vancouvers
key shopping destinations can be found in three districts: South
Granville, Yaletown and Downtown. While these areas contain such well-known
staples as Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton and Restoration Hardware, there
also are a wealth of local boutiques and shops full of interesting wares. Be
sure and check out Martha Sturdy Originals, which features unique furniture and
house wares by local designer Martha Sturdy. Another great store is
Lothantique, which sells a wonderful array of French beauty, bath and home
fragrance products. For interesting and innovative apparel, check out Mod to
Modern and Barefoot Contessa.
When youre ready to satisfy your appetite, Vancouver more than meets the demand for
quality meals. For a tasty lunch, stop in at Feenies and sample the poutinea
Canadian favorite of hand-cut fries with cheese curds and gravy. For dinner,
seafood lovers will adore Coast, whose menu includes delectable selections like
Alaskan king crab gnocchi and smoked bacon clam chowder. A hot spot for
cocktails and conversation, the Opus Bar, located in the Opus Hotel lobby, is
the ideal place to see and be seen. Stargazers especially should keep an eye
out for their favorite celebs, who frequent this posh boutique hotel.
If all this activity and eating wears you out, then head to
Skoah, an idyllic retreat located in Vancouvers trendy Yaletown community. I
highly recommend the facialiscious treatment, a facial unlike any other. This
treatment includes deep cleansing, exfoliating, delicate extractions,
detoxifying, stimulating masques and soothing massage. Trust me when I say you
will think you died and went to heaven. And, one of the best parts, all of
Skoahs products come loaded with quality, natural ingredients.
